Development Background

Over the past 2 years, we have accumulated a lot of feedback from CNC users. The newbies think it is very complicated to set the right parameters such as engraving speed, depth per pass, plunge rate, and so on. The seasoned machinists believe desktop CNCs, such as the 4040-XE, are still not strong enough to cut aluminum and brass easily and precisely. So FoxAlien keeps on thinking to find a solution to satisfy both the newbies and the veterans. What if we can bring a machine that has more room for the new user to make errors, even if the settings are not perfect, they can still carve with nice results. What if this machine can meet the experienced user's requirements to engrave and cut soft metal easily. Now, we are introducing the best CNC Router Machine in FoxAlien’s family. The CNC Machine Vasto upgrades everything: the linear bearings, the extrusions, the ball screws, the motors and the controller box (independent drivers for each axis). This machine comes with the 400W spindle stock. In order to release the full potential of this Monster, we strongly recommend upgrading to the DeWalt DWP611 or the Makita Router. (DeWalt and Makita router are not included)

Vasto and two years of ownership

Two years ago, I decided that I was going to invest in a CNC to increase the capabilities of my small maker space contained within my garage. I looked at all of the various manufacturers that you would during your pre-purchase research. The FoxAlien Vasto stood out as a clear winner for the money. The linear rail and ball-screw design make for a much tougher machine. This is what I needed to have greater flexibility with the materials I could use to complete projects without sending out for parts to be made.

The machine arrived. Albeit a little late, I bought it during a holiday, so I guess that's to be forgiven. :) The machine went together in only 30 minutes, and straight out of the box, the machine was trammed within minutes. In the two years that I've owned the machine, I have not had any major issues that weren't my own fault. I use the stock spindle and the 40w laser to complete my projects. The Vasto has enabled the next level of craftsmanship in my hobbies. From machining aluminum arms for an RC car to making a cutting board from leveling to inlay. I love my vasto and if you're like me and expect a little bit more from your hobby machine than a belt-driven machine can deliver. This is your machine.

Great machine, Steep learning curve

This has a high quality build, easy to assemble and not long before I was able to use the test cuts that where on the USB stick. Then I hit a brick wall as the learning curve is very steep. In the first week, I have managed to level a spoil board, V Carve a photo, relief 3D carve and set up the laser to burn a few letters. In the process, I have sworn a lot and messed up a load of wood. Overall happy with my purchase and looking forwards to learning

Works Fine, Collecting Lots of Dust

Has worked flawlessly since assembly. Two weeks and many projects have been made. Using V-Carve Desktop for CAD/CAM and gSender as gcode sender.

No regrets!

This is a beautiful and solid machine. I have had it for a month now and I enjoy it more every time I use it. Its operation is smooth and flawless and the components are hefty and well built.

Linear Rails, Ballscrews, No belts!

Very impressed with the Vasto! Shipped in 3 boxes, my first impressions upon opening them and seeing the majority of stuff pre-assembled, was very good. Seeing the linear rails, 16mm ballscrews, etc. Made me feel the quality of the machine is good. The Gantry has 10mm thick aluminum plates that bolt onto 10mm thick plates on the Y axis. Making for 20mm of aluminum mounting to the Y axis linear blocks. This machine was built very rigid! I'm able to cut aluminum easily with a 1/4" single-flute mill. I did put my own spindle on the machine, which allowed me to do 16mm deep cuts in aluminum given I respect the feedrate.

It's pretty easy to do cuts in aluminum without chatter if you know your speeds/feeds. Very easy to come back around with a 0.2mm finish pass and get really really shiny cuts! I bought this machine for wood/plastic, not expecting it to do aluminum. Honestly after seeing the results, I'm looking forward to cutting more!

I will say. Treat it as any CNC machine. Even if you buy a 20K CNC mill. The first thing you should do before running it, is alignments and tramming. Yes, the machine will cut freshly put together and can do the job. But if you're after precision cutting, I highly recommend aligning stuff.

The bed, stock, does flex. I didn't find this to be a problem for "crafts" but did find it to be a problem for ripping deep and fast into hard materials. I dont really deem this a reason to mark-down my review, as you can work with it. I didn't personally notice any issues until I was trying to do 20mm cuts into HDPE at 1500mm/min.

Overall. I'm very happy with this purchase. It's a very solid/rigid machine as illustrated with the results of my aluminum cutting. The cuts sounded great, coming from a 7-year seasoned aerospace machinist. Pretty accustomed to what a good cut sounds like by now.
